"Kulokh". Late 19th century. Uzbeks, Tadjiks. Samarkand region

"Kulokh" - dervish (Sufi Muslim ascetic) head dress. The base of the hat was a felt cap covered with cloth and decorated with woolen fringe which imitatesd fur. Kulokh was also decorated with embroidery. Among ornaments there was Arabic script like ornament, which was the most respectful among Muslims. Mainly kulokh was made of wool as a symbol of austerity (sufi - arab. wool).
