The Arctic – Inhabited Land. About the Project

The Arctic – Inhabited Land. About the Project

“The Arctic – Inhabited Land” is the first in the Museum’s history online catalogue of unique artifacts and photographs, priceless sources on the traditions and everyday life of peoples inhabiting it.

The Arctic is a space of absolute domination of cold, a source of perpetual challenges for man, a place of feats and self-sacrifice, at all times was a special attraction for Russian businessmen, merchants, travelers, and researchers. The history of its exploration goes back many centuries. It was in the Arctic, a land of unbelievable natural, cultural, and evaluative contrasts, that the tremendous potential of established Arctic communities was put to use, their flexibility and sustainability enabling man to adapt to extreme environmental conditions. Observing the life of Arctic peoples, and living side by side with them, Russian pathbreakers, mariners, service men, and missionaries themselves in many ways adopted in their everyday life the experience and skills of local tribes, especially those related to the life-support system.

The catalog comprises 10 theme albums covering the most picturesque and representative aspects of life of peoples inhabiting the Russian Arctic. For the first time, all those interested in the history and culture of the Arctic peoples get public access to the Museum’s inexhaustible collections.

The archeological and ethnographic artifacts, historical photos, and artwork (graphics) published in the theme albums give an idea of common and unique features in ethnocultural traditions of the Arctic region.

This project is the first experience of publishing an integration online catalog involving specialists in various fields. The image of the “Arctic home” common for everyone, where the Saami, Karelians, Russians, Komi, and indigenous peoples of Siberia and the Far Northeast have peacefully coexisted for several centuries is inexhaustible and multifaceted.

“The Arctic – Inhabited Land” catalog is not only an information resource, but also a kind of open digital platform, where invite all institutions concerned, in particular our partners museums of the Arctic, for exchange of experience and for cooperation.

“The Arctic – Inhabited Land” online catalog was created as part of the project “Study, Preservation, and Promotion of the Historical and Cultural Heritage of the Arctic,” with financial support by Arctic Initiatives Center ANCO.
